How can pain be a good thing?  It does sound like an oxymoron but pain can be a good thing in the right situation.  We first have to understand one important concept and that is change comes at a price.  If we want to make a change in our health, muscle tone, flexibility, endurance we have to do things differently.  When you do things differently your body has to adjust/change and that can cause some pain/soreness.   This muscle soreness is associated when you begin a new exercise program, change your exercise routine, or dramatically increase the duration or intensity of your exercise routine.   The soreness is thought to be a result of microscopic tearing of the muscle fibers. The amount of tearing (and soreness) depends on how hard and how long you exercise and what type of exercise you do.  The microscopic tearing is what will lead to tissue development and growth.  That will lead to a healthier or functional joint.  So if you want to change, embrace the pain.
